1) Can you tell us how you came to be in your role

I was looking for opportunities that fit with some clear criteria I have set myself for my career going forward. I am keen to only work with organisations that share my values, I want to utilise my experience creating positive impact, and, finally, I want to make sure I can add real value to what is needed from any role I take.

The opportunity to be Interim Membership Director at Inclusive Employers appears to tick all these boxes. My most recent experience has been at another membership organisation that had many similarities to where Inclusive Employers find ourselves now, which, whilst recognising that no businesses are exactly the same, will hopefully mean I can leverage some recent experiences. I enjoyed my conversations with Peter, CEO and John, Chairman who added to my feeling that Inclusive Employers is exactly the right organisation for me now.

2) Can you share an ‘inclusion moment’ with us – a time when you have felt included either at work or in your personal life?

I am very happy to share an very personal inclusion moment that started early in my life and continues today. I was fostered and then adopted from the age of about 4 years old. I look very different to my adoptive family, making it obvious I am not a birth child or sibling. However, I have been blessed to be included and treated no differently to anyone else in the family from day one until now.

I had a wonderful, nurturing, loving, stable, supportive upbringing from my parents, my ‘mum and dad’ and today enjoy family time with my ‘brothers’ and ‘sisters’ and extended family. Not feeling included as a ‘Diamond’ has never entered my head or been experienced in my family home. Life could have been very different.

3) What do you love most about your role?

It is very early in my tenure at Inclusive Employers, and I am very definitely in listening and learning mode. I really like how welcoming everybody has been and the conversations I have had have been candid, open, and positive. There is a clear objective amongst the team members to deliver well to our members and support them to have positive impact. I like the single focus of Inclusive employers on inclusion in its broader sense.

4) What is a typical day like for you?

There is a lot for me to learn at Inclusive Employers, many people to meet and lots of reading to do. Currently my diary is filling up with internal meetings and time to absorb information. I am hoping this will change slightly over time and my typical day will also include some member meetings. I am a client guy at heart and love nothing more than meeting people, getting to understand their needs, and then supporting the team in delivering to them, whilst still recognising the real expertise sits with the experienced consultants we are so lucky to have.

5) What has been your most memorable moment in your inclusion career?

Whilst not always being involved in inclusion directly in my career, as a leader and manager, I have always been focused on giving everyone in my team the opportunity to be the best they can be despite any differences or barriers that may stop them achieving that.

My most memorable moments, and there have been many, is when I have supported individuals who haven’t had the chance to achieve their potential, go on and then move to much bigger, more fulfilling roles. As an example, in my last organisation I gave a young individual, who was being overlooked due to age, an earlier than might be expected senior account manager role. She flourished and then went on to become ESG Director for a large UK FMC.
